The electricity industry throughout the world, which has long been dominated by vertically integrated utilities, is undergoing enormous changes. Deregulation has necessitates the decomposition of three components of electric power industry: generation, transmission ai.d distribution. Although real power is the main traded commodity in power markets, reactive power also plays vital role in power systems reliability. This paper discusses a method to determine reactive power flow and loss named as Proportional Tree Method (PTM). After power flow solution is obtained, the test system is modeled conceptually as a tree, where the tracing is done from a particular generator to a particular line or load through the routes that connect between them. The veracity of the method is demonstrated by numerical examples. Comparison of the results with other method is also given.
