Morphological evaluation and classification of peripheral blood and bone marrow samples is one of the standard diagnostic procedures for acute leukemia. The morphological diagnosis involves manually distinguishing cells and classifying its possible subtypes. One of the greatest challenges in the engineering technology is to transform this human practical task into computer based system. In this paper, we review some of the image segmentation and classification technique that has been proposed and developed by researchers involving blood cell images. Each proposed method is based on the image content and requirement, therefore the advantages and disadvantages of each method is compared and discussed.
