Optimum design of distribution transformer is desirable by all utilities as they contribute quite a large portion of the investment in an electrical distribution network system. Utility investigation of the specification of transformers and the magnetic circuit requirement is the objective of this paper. In practice the tender requirement from TNB and SESCO implement various principles in order to reduce the transformer losses. SESCO specification is much better in the long term but at extra cost due to better silicon iron used. TNB on the other hand, still make some saving on losses but have plenty of room for improvement especially in controlling losses from all possible angles. The issues which are presented in this paper cover the acceptance of evaluation during capitalization exercises, losses guaranteed values and manufacturing decision. It is hoped that the specification for distribution transformer in the near future will be more design economic and production friendly that can provide a win-win situation between the manufacture and the utility.
