The design of reverted compound gear
Abstract
This paper is about designing a reverted compound gear for automotive use. The
reverted compound gear is widely use in automotive industries. This type of gear train is
use in many gearboxes either in car or motorcycle. The motorcycle gearbox that been use in
this redesign project is HONDA EX5 Dream. The motorcycle gear box is simpler if we
compare to the car gearboxes. Motorcycle gearboxes consist of 2 parallel shafts, which one
shaft is connected to the clutch and the other one is connected to the sprocket. In this
project, 4 pairs of the helical gear has been use to replace the spur gear. Each gear will be
paired with one of the gear will be fixed to the shaft and the other one will be free rotating
gear. In spur gear gearboxes, some of the gear can slide to the right or left when gear
shifting is happen. The use of helical gear make this sliding is impossible because of the
helical shape of the gear tooth. The locker are use for this shifting job in the helical
gearboxes, the locker will sliding to the right or left to lock the free rotating gear to the
moving shaft when the shifting is done. The locker will lock the selected gear to the shaft
following the gear sequences from the 1st gear to the 4th gear.
