Corrosion behavior of copper base alloy In present of straits Of Malacca seawater
Abstract
The corrosion behavior of C2801 brass in presence of Straits of Malacca seawater ,
collected from different locations which are Klebang (Malacca), Tanjung Kling (Malacca), Tanjung Emas (Johore), Kuala Perlis (Perlis) and Straits of Malacca were investigated . The pH of seawater was determined and the C2801 brass in coupon with the dimension of 2 x 1.5 x 0.05cm were prepared for the test experiment, immersed in seawater for 10 days , 20 days , 30 days , 40 days and 50 days. Within 10 days intervals, the weight loss and corresponding corrosion rates of C2801 brass were being determined. The morphology of the corroded surfaces was analyzed by image analyzer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). After immersion test, intergranular corrosion, pitting corrosion and precipitation of carbon , zinc compound and copper compound on the surface of C2801 brass were observed . The highest weight loss can be found on the sample of 30 days immersion in high pH Tanjung Emas seawater . The corrosion rate of C2801 brass in Straits of Malacca seawater is between 1.5748 x 10 -5 to 3.0446 x 10 -4 g/cm2 days . Seawater from different location resulted in different corrosion behavior of
C2801 brass.
